Futures turnover calculator.

Futures turnover is commonly overstated when traders use full lot value or margin. For tax-audit purposes, futures turnover is based on differences, not exposure.

How to calculate

Method
  1. Use the realised favourable and unfavourable differences from closed futures trades.
  2. Add absolute profit and absolute loss components according to the derivatives turnover method.
  3. Exclude brokerage and statutory charges from turnover; treat them as expenses.
  4. Aggregate futures with options and other derivative segments before applying s.44AB.

Inputs to collect

Before you start

Futures realised profit

Use broker reports, ledgers, contract notes, or invoices as support.

Futures realised loss

Use broker reports, ledgers, contract notes, or invoices as support.

Broker tax P&L

Use broker reports, ledgers, contract notes, or invoices as support.

Segment-wise futures reports

Common mistakes

Avoid these

Do not use margin

Margin blocked is a risk-control number, not income-tax turnover.

Do not use lot value

Contract notional value can be huge and is not the tax-audit turnover figure.

Keep segment reports

NSE, BSE, currency, and commodity futures may be split across broker exports.

Frequently asked questions

Is futures turnover full contract value?
No. Use favourable and unfavourable differences, not notional contract value.
Are futures profits business income?
Yes. Exchange-traded futures are generally non-speculative business income.
Do futures losses require audit?
A loss alone does not trigger audit. Apply the s.44AB turnover and 44AD-history tests.
