F&O tax filing documents checklist.

Most F&O filing errors start with missing documents. A Tax P&L summary is useful, but it is not the whole evidence trail.

Documents support Schedule BP, turnover, audit, loss schedules, capital gains, and reconciliation.

Step-by-step workflow

Do this
  1. Download reports from every broker.
  2. Reconcile broker P&L with ledger and contract notes.
  3. Download AIS/Form 26AS and compare capital-gains/dividend/interest data.
  4. Collect expense invoices and bank statements.
  5. Keep prior-year returns for loss and 44AD history.

Common mistakes

Avoid

Only downloading Tax P&L

Ledger and contract notes support charges and audit working papers.

Forgetting old brokers

Inactive accounts can still have FY trades or charges.

No prior-year loss schedule

Frequently asked questions

Are contract notes necessary?
Keep them. They support trade-level and charge-level details.
Do I need AIS for F&O?
AIS may not fully show F&O P&L but is needed for interest, dividends, capital gains, and reconciliation.
How long should I keep records?
Keep them for several years; audit/scrutiny and updated-return windows can extend practical retention needs.
